Haaretz.com:WASHINGTON - Syrian President Bashar Assad is offering to make peace with Israel and says he is ready to cooperate with the United States in stabilizing Iraq, a former senior State Department official said Wednesday.
"Something is going on in Syria and it is time for us to pay attention," said Martin Indyk, assistant secretary of state for the Near East and U.S. ambassador to Israel during the Clinton administration.

Actually, that "peace" offer has been on the table for quite a while now.
Only those pesky Israelis insist that all Syrian-based or -supported "proxies" also adhere to a ceasefire before talks can start.

Oh, Assad is a slippery pig to be sure, but he's going to need all the wiggle room he can get once the Marines take Fallujah and turn up a great many Syrian passports.
