But the Internet never forgets.
I have never liked that emblematic slogan of the Clinton War Room, "It's the economy, stupid." I have a visceral dislike for calling anyone "stupid." (No doubt something to do with having a mother who believed in lady-like behaviour.)
May speaks quickly in the clip, and some (including May) assert that what she really said was not "I think" but "they think," as in:"All the other politicians are scared-to-death to mention the word ‘tax’, and they think Canadians are stupid and cannot - and I fundamentally agree with that assessment - but most politicians think that if you say that ‘we’re going to put on a carbon tax, and reduce your income tax, they don’t think they can sell it. It’s all about votes.
. . . whether she said "I think" or "they think" matters little, because she followed up the "stupid" assessment with the words "and I fundamentally agree with that assessment." Or, at least that is how its sounds to people who trust their senses and their intelligence.

I picked up on this in September. It's a no-go. She says "they think Canadians are stupid" and the "I fundamentally agree with that assessment" is with regards to the question the guy asked.
This was brought up first by an NDPer and his blog during the May debate exclusion when Jackie Layton was getting crap.
Believe me, there's nothing I'd rather see than something stuffed to May but there's nothing here. I remember I listened to it like 25 times straight and there really isn't anything there except a poorly constructed sentence that might have people think twice at first.

Well Phil - I listened with MY OWN EARS and I heard "they" but the fact she says - "I fundamentally agree with that statement" - no matter how you spin it; means exactly what it means - she agrees with the statement "they think Canadians are stupid"
But somehow Liz May just won't go away and continues to foist herself onto the Canadian political scene. For some reason she is tolerated; maybe it is her personality which is sugar sweet to your face; but poison behind your back.
