CTV:
TORONTO - "Avatar" director-turned-activist James Cameron says Alberta's tar sands are a "black eye" to his native country's image as an environmental leader. The Canadian-born filmmaker says he wants to learn more about the controversial Athabasca Oil Sands Project after being contacted by indigenous groups who are concerned by its impact.
He questioned why Canada is spending billions on extracting crude oil instead of pursuing sustainable options.
"I think it's bad, I think it's the wrong solution for us to be doing greater and greater environmental damage pursuing a dead-end paradigm, which is fossil fuels, instead of spending those billions ... on building wind turbines," Cameron said Tuesday from his home in Los Angeles.
"Those same areas are a great wind belt and we could be generating ... wind energy out of the same place. Why aren't we doing that?"
Who is this "we" you speak of, Kemosabe? You seem capable of generating great gusts of wind out of your rear end. I suggest you bottle it and try powering your limo with it.

How much energy was burned creating the movie and having people watch it in air conditioned theaters?

Why are Canadians spending billions to dig out oil from the tar sands, rather than investing billions in avian and chiropteran cuisinarts?
Because oil, unlike wind, will generate reliable power - enough power to allow people to go to movies and be assured that they can sit through all 2 and 3/4 hours of eye-candy - instead of fearing a brown-out an any moment that the wind dies down or the power grid collapses from voltage instability - telling them a story of how nice it would be if all just live off the land.
At least, the few of us that the land would actually support.
Unlike in the movies, Mother Nature really doesn't give a d*mn about their beliefs and their sensitivies. With reliable power - and wind will never amount to more than a niche provider, no matter how many billions we throw at it, because basic physics is against it - there's even enough luxury to allow self-righteous twits to lecture us on how guilty we should feel about our lifestyle - but only AFTER he's been paid, mind you.

-exactly. He is king of the world, so why doesn't he go make a profitable wind farm? No his socialist buddies want to pick my pocket to build monuments to stupidity to indulge their guilt.

I guess Wal-Mart and Blockbuster should catch those 18 wheeler carbon spewers loaded with Cameron's movie before they cross over the Alberta border because Albertans have a way of boycotting things after idiots make stupid comments like this one.
No point in leaving a bigger carbon footprint when the truck is sent back, fully loaded.

I wonder if it occurs to him he is the one giving us the black eye?

Indigenous people? Oh, right they want more money from the federal government and more money from industry and more money from eco-nuts, and the list is endless.
It's a racket, and all the usual suspects are crowding around the oil sands with their hands out for more money, and then they complain when the price of gas goes up.

I have managed to avoid both of Cameron's movies (Titanic and Avatar) - now I celebrate the fact that this sanctimonious director wasn't enriched by my discretionary entertainment dollars. What a cheese ball - he needs to spend a little time away from his air conditioner. Cheers.
