A man who was killed in a weekend standoff with police allegedly came out of his house in darkness carrying an umbrella like a gun, then pointed it at police before being shot to death by an RCMP constable. As investigators begin their probe into the police shooting death of Corey Lewis, a close family friend said he suspects Lewis saw no other way out of his predicament.
The husband of a town councillor, Lewis died at the hands of an RCMP constable when he left his Okotoks home in the early morning hours on Sunday after an armed standoff that began when police tried to arrest him on a report he had hit his teenage stepson.
Sure, it was only an umbrella; but what if he had one of those assault staplers?

Any officer under perceived threat should of took cover while the other officers not being "aimed" at can continue to asses the situation as to determining the need to open fire or not.
All well within the span of a minute. And when shooting first does the shot even require lethal force?
The ones who did shoot should either lose their lethal ammunitions or be sent to work at a desk until their reflexes and reactionary discernment are capable of distinguishing an umbrella from a gun.
Obviously in a battlefield I wouldn't put our soldiers at risk with any such rules since really bad things can and have happened repeatedly with an enemy who gears their tactics in such a way that makes our guys increasingly weary of such instances... but over here, where our police have enough resources to sit back for a little longer and afford to give each moment that much more attention, I don't see a reason why this even should of happened. They police had no reason to lose control since the ball was in their court.
