Welfare Barbie And Other Flops

Worth1000.com is a site that features very good Photoshopped parodies of various things. They claim copyright over the pictures, which seems dubious, as the pictures often themselves contain trademarked images, but I'm not going to argue the point. Go here to look at some games that didn't quite make it to the market.

Top Gun

One of the best computer art sites around is Worth1000. It has forums on using Photoshop, extensive galleries, and runs contests, some of which are for money (people wanting graphic designs, etc., will put up $50-100+ for something that meets their needs). It also has a superb tutorial section. A recent contribution to it was by "Grumplebits," explaining the steps in aging someone's face, using for an example the actress Katie Holmes, the future (?) / present(?) / former(?) Mrs. Tom Cruise. (I'm really not up on the latest Hollywood buzz.)

See, that's where the title comes from. One of Cruise's most famous roles was in Top Gun, and "Grumplebits" could also be considered a "Top Gun" of the . . . ah, forget it. Just go look.

I used a combination of the Stamp tool and Brush tool. I wish I could explain my technique at this point in a more clinical manner but mostly I relied on my artistic instincts. I emphasized the wrinkles around the eyes by widening and deepening the lines slightly and increasing the contrast by darkening the recesses and lightening the edges. Also, I extended wrinkles to the cheekbone areas. I then applied the same technique to the wrinkles around the mouth and to the forehead.

The Cupidator Mk. IV

robotpsyche2Another Worth1000 photoshopping contest in mixing genres; in this case, classical themes and, er, robots.

The original (woman, not robot) was titled "Le Ravissement de Psyche [The Rapture of Psyche]," painted in 1895 by William Bouguereau and can be seen here. (The story of Psyche here.) It's a fine example of representational art, which fell into critical disfavor with the rise of the Impressionists.

There's more of similar calibre at the Art Renewal site (Warning: some nudity, both partial and implied). To my untutored eye, at least, they're comparable to the work of the Renaissance masters.

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Arts Club Band

sgtpeppersdl4FARK was recently running a contest to duplicate famous album covers using MS Paint. Even with a graphics tablet and stylus it's a bit like using an Etch-A-Sketch. (Paint is the drawing program included with Windows. If you've never played around with it, you can run it by clicking Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Paint.)

This is not to say that you can't create good (if somewhat lifeless) pictures with Paint. The artist who created this estimates it took about 500 hours of work, and I can fully believe it.

For that matter, you can use Etch-A-Sketch.

House Fire Caught On Google Earth!

housefire

Actually, it was faked by the satirical website The Onion.

But given the breadth of coverage by Google Earth, it would be statistically improbable that it wouldn't find something, somewhere, on fire. Next time I hear that satellite going overhead, I am so torching this place.
